The starting quarterback for Penn State (my alma mater) is currently Anthony Morelli. If you haven't seen him play, don't. Just watching him could cause you to start throwing things in random directions with no regard to the consequences. What I mean is, he's horrible.
For some reason, Joe Paterno and the Penn State coaches refuse to bench him. This is a mistake. They probably continue to play him out of some misguided sense of loyalty as he is a senior and has "earned" the chance to play. The trouble is, Penn State has 80 other guys who have worked just as hard and still have more seasons left in their college careers.
Penn State's season this year is essentially lost. They can't win the National Championship and the Big Ten is all but lost. They're a long shot to even get back to the Outback bowl that they won last year. It's wrong for Joe Paterno to continue playing Morelli when he could be getting experience for one of the younger QBs. Instead, Penn State will once again start next season with great talent and experience at every position except quarterback. If a younger QB were playing now, the starting QB next year would at least have some experience and would have a better chance of winning the Big Ten.
Continuing to play Morelli is also bad for recruiting. What top recruit would want to go to a school where they risk being stuck behind a mediocre player who continues to start only because he's a senior. All top programs play the best players they have, which helps them in recruiting more top players, not to mention the benefit in just having their most talented players on the field.
Bench Morelli, JoePa. Your short sighted approach to the depth chart consistently leads to losses and poor performances early in the season.
